Don't Quit

What does it actually take to receive what we ask of God? This message digs into a question most of us have wrestled with at some point in our faith journey. Drawing from John chapters 14 and 15, we explore four foundational expectations that shape how God responds to our requests. It is not simply a matter of asking in Jesus' name as if those words were a magic formula. The surrounding context of those familiar verses reveals something deeper: a genuine love relationship with God, a careful and tender obedience to his commandments, a constant abiding in him rather than reaching for him only in moments of need, and a faithfulness that produces lasting fruit. These are not burdensome requirements but rather the natural markers of a life truly connected to Christ. The message challenges us to stop reading scripture in isolated fragments and instead let the full weight of God's word speak into our lives. When we do, we discover that the promises of God are not a blank check written to anyone who utters the right words, but a living covenant extended to those who walk closely with him every single day.

5-Day Devotional

Day 1: Love Him With Everything You Have

Reading:
Matthew 22:34-40

Devotional:
Jesus makes it clear that loving God is not a partial commitment. It demands the whole heart, the whole soul, and the whole mind. It is easy to love God when life is going well and prayers are being answered. The real test comes when silence fills the room where you expected an answer. True love does not retreat when conditions are uncomfortable. It stays. It worships. It trusts. Examine your relationship with God today. Is he on the shelf, or is he the center of your daily life? A love that holds nothing back opens the door for God to move powerfully on your behalf.
Personal Reflection: Are there areas of your life where you love God conditionally? What would it look like to surrender those areas fully to him today?
Practical Application: Set aside ten minutes today to simply tell God you love him, not asking for anything, not bringing a list of needs, just expressing love and gratitude for who he is.

Day 2: Tend the Word With Loving Care

Reading:
Psalm 119:9-16

Devotional:
The word keep, as used in John 14:15, carries the meaning of tending something carefully, the way a gardener tends a garden. A neglected garden does not suddenly produce a harvest. Weeds crowd out the good plants. Drought dries up the fruit. The same is true in our spiritual lives. The commandments of God are not burdens designed to weigh us down. They are seeds that, when tended with care, produce life and blessing. When we read the Word, apply it honestly, and return to it consistently, we are doing the work of the faithful gardener. The harvest follows the tending.
Personal Reflection: Which of God's commandments have you been neglecting or avoiding? What would it look like to tend that area of your life with care rather than resistance?
Practical Application: Identify one specific area of obedience you have been putting off. Take one concrete step toward it today, no matter how small.

Day 3: Remain, Abide, Stay

Reading:
John 15:1-11

Devotional:
The word abide is not passive. It is an active, daily choice to remain connected to the source of life. A branch that is cut from the vine does not slowly recover on its own. It withers. The same is true of a believer who drifts from consistent communion with God. Life gets busy. Distractions multiply. Hurt and disappointment can tempt us to pull away from the very one who sustains us. But Romans 8:35-39 reminds us that nothing in all of creation has the power to sever God's love from us. We are the ones who walk away. The invitation to return is always open.
Personal Reflection: In what seasons of your life have you felt most connected to God? What practices kept you rooted during those times, and how can you return to them now?
Practical Application: Commit to a specific daily habit this week, whether Scripture reading, prayer, or quiet reflection, that keeps you connected to God rather than drifting from him.

Day 4: Bear Fruit and Watch God Move

Reading:
Galatians 5:16-25

Devotional:
The fruit of the Spirit is not manufactured by human effort. It is produced by the Holy Spirit working in and through a life that is surrendered to his leading. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control are the evidence of a Spirit-filled life. And according to John 15:16, it is a fruitful life that positions us to receive what we ask from the Father. This is not about earning God's favor. It is about alignment. When our lives are producing what the Spirit intends, our desires begin to align with what God desires, and his answers flow naturally from that place of agreement.
Personal Reflection: Which fruit of the Spirit is most visibly present in your life right now? Which is most lacking? What might God be inviting you to surrender so that fruit can grow?
Practical Application: Choose one fruit of the Spirit to focus on intentionally this week. Look for specific moments in your daily interactions where you can practice it, even when it is difficult.

Day 5: Do Not Quit

Reading:
Matthew 15:21-28

Devotional:
The Canaanite woman in Matthew 15 faced every reason to give up. She was ignored, dismissed, and compared to a dog. Yet she did not quit. She knew who Jesus was, and she refused to leave without her answer. Her persistence was not desperation. It was faith. Great faith, Jesus called it. The same invitation stands for every believer today. When God seems silent, when circumstances seem to say no, when the enemy whispers that your faith is not enough, you have a choice. You can walk away, or you can remain at the master's feet and refuse to leave without your answer. Do not quit.
Personal Reflection: What request have you laid down because you grew tired of waiting? Is God calling you to pick it back up and bring it to him again with renewed faith and persistence?
Practical Application: Write down one prayer you have been tempted to abandon. Bring it before God today with fresh faith. Commit to praying it daily for the next thirty days, trusting that his timing and his answer are worth waiting for.
